Everything you are is the sum of everything that you have done and experienced so far.

There are a lot of things we can’t control, that’s life. But there’s still a lot we can control. What we eat, what we do when we wake up, do we exercise or not, what we do in our free time, where do we go and who are our friends.

Whatever decisions you take, it will make who you are. If you have a poor diet and don’t exercise. If you choose to watch Netflix every day instead of reading good books, the only thing you will be improving is the chit-chat with your friends.

The good news is you can break a bad habit. You can change your diet and you can read more and watch less Netflix. Make a list of your bad habits and some good habits you would like to have and start planning your day accordingly.

How long it takes to break a habit and form a new one really depends on how determined you are and how difficult is that habit to be implemented. But in my opinion, you shouldn’t worry much if it will take 5 days or 5 months if it’s that important you will do whatever it takes for how long it takes.

The chains of habit are too light to be felt until they are too heavy to be broke.

Warren Buffet

There are four stages of any habit good or bad. Understanding these stages will help you build or destroy habits.

It all begins with the Cue. This is when you remember the habit (good or bad) like eating sugar or reading a book. This is when the Craving is triggered, you want to do the habit and then you respond to it, you either do it or you don’t. The reward comes while doing the habit and this gives strength to the next time you’ll get a Cue.

The more you perform an action that gives you a reward, the stronger that habit will become.

If you want to create a good habit, make things accessible, attractive, easy and satisfying. For example, place a book in a place you would read it and start reading for 10 minutes and go up from there.

To break a habit, make things hard to get, unattractive and unsatisfying. If you want to start eating healthy don’t buy bad things when you go shopping. Make a list of healthy things you want to buy and stick with the list. You don’t have it at home, it’s less likely you are going to eat it.

Good habits are key to success. So here’s a list of good habits you might want to implement in your life.

1 – Take at least one action that will move you to your goal
2 – Plan your day
3 – Save money
4 – Optimize your work
